XL-21 power distribution cabinet

The old familiar face in the corner of the shop floor
Model GU-XL21 · AC 380V · main switch ≤630 A · single-front access against a wall · MOQ 1 unit
The XL-21 is the classic cabinet for local power distribution on the shop floor: an isolator or switch-fuse as the main incoming device, branch breakers and contactors below it per equipment item, wall-mounted with single-front access — rugged, inexpensive, and instantly recognizable. It sits one level below GGD: after the electrical room GGD distributes power, an XL-21 goes up beside each production line or large machine on the shop floor, so faults and maintenance stay confined to that cabinet and never reach the electrical room.
  • Configuration: isolator or switch-fuse main incoming device plus branch breakers inside, single-front access, wall-mounted
  • Main switch: ≤630 A (isolator or switch-fuse, with a visible break)
  • Branch circuits: breaker + contactor + thermal overload for motor circuits, or breaker only for feeders
  • Enclosure: 600/800 mm wide × 350/400 mm deep × 1700/1800 mm high, flexible module sizes
  • Components: Schneider / ABB / Siemens / Chint; brand can be specified, or customer-supplied components shipped to our plant

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

Visible break

Visible disconnect

Main incoming uses a disconnect switch or switch-fuse: after opening, the break is visible and lockout/tagout is straightforward — a traditional XL-21 advantage, and we do not cut this component.

Single-side maintenance

Wall-mounted to save space

All internal components are front-mounted for single-side maintenance when installed against a wall: saves one meter of space versus a double-side maintenance cabinet where shop aisles are tight.

Complete front face

Operate without opening the cabinet

Pushbuttons, indicator lights and ammeters are all door-mounted: daily operation needs no cabinet door to be opened, cutting live-open risk to zero.

Top busbar runs through

Pre-fabricated parallel busbar

When multiple cabinets are lined up, the top-mounted busbar is factory pre-fabricated to run through with a constant cross-section — on site, align and bolt up, then power on.

Circuit-by-circuit testing

Energized operation checked one by one

Every circuit gets an energized operation test, with contactors and protection settings verified at the same time — the XL-21 is inexpensive, but factory testing is not where we cut corners.

Spare-parts friendly

Off-the-shelf parts, repairable anywhere

Every component inside the cabinet is a standard commercial part — the kind of model number you can buy at a small-town hardware store. Full drawings and BOM included, so repairs are never blocked by proprietary parts.

05 — APPLICATIONS

Where these cabinets go

These are the routine applications — we can talk scheme and configuration directly. For the industry view, see the industry pages.

Workshop production line distribution

One cabinet per line, distributing and controlling power right where it is needed.

Pump rooms and water treatment

Branch circuits for pump groups with automatic liquid level control.

Air compressor rooms

Local distribution for air compressors and downstream treatment equipment.

HVAC and boiler rooms

Branch circuit control for unit fans.

Warehouses and logistics

Power distribution for conveying and lifting equipment.

Old workshop retrofit

Replace old cabinets using standard XL-21 module sizes — mounting positions stay unchanged.

08 — FAQ

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

How do the XL-21 and GGD divide the work?

Position and role: the GGD sits in the electrical room handling the main incoming line, metering and power factor correction (larger cabinet, heavier busbar, can be coupled into sections); the XL-21 sits on the workshop floor handling local distribution (smaller cabinet, lower cost, single-front access against a wall). Typical architecture: electrical room GGD → workshop XL-21 → equipment.

Why insist on an isolator switch as the main switch?

A visible break point: after isolation for maintenance, you can see the open contacts, and lockout/tagout has a physical anchor. A breaker gives no visible indication of its internal state. The isolator's visible break is an XL-21 safety tradition — that is not where you save money.

How many circuits can one cabinet carry?

An 800 mm wide cabinet typically handles 4–8 circuits (including motor circuits) or 10–12 pure feeder circuits; beyond that, either move to a double-front cabinet or split into multiple cabinets. Heat dissipation and operating space are hard constraints — we lay out circuits according to your circuit list.

Can automatic control be added?

Yes: automatic start/stop circuits for liquid level, pressure or temperature, or a small PLC for simple interlocking — the XL-21 door face and internal space both leave room for it. Send your control requirements along with the circuit list.

Is the cabinet dust-tight?

Standard is IP30 (adequate for a normal workshop). For high-dust environments (woodworking, foundries, cement), upgrade to IP54: gasketed door seals, cable glands on all entries, and filtered fans. For washdown environments, choose a stainless steel outdoor box.

How long is the shutdown for a cabinet replacement in an old workshop?

For a cabinet replicated 1:1 from your circuit list, on-site changeover and wiring typically takes half a day to one day per cabinet: incoming and outgoing positions and terminal numbers are drawn to match the old cabinet, and cables reconnect in place. Schedule the retrofit window in advance — we will align our delivery schedule with it.
