The viewing window cabinet has an observation window cut into the door: 4 mm tempered glass (clear reading, scratch-resistant) or 3–5 mm PC sheet (impact-resistant, will not shatter). Meters, pilot lights and HMIs are positioned behind the window, so routine inspection readings are taken without opening the door — every door opening takes life off the gasket and lets contamination into the cabinet. The window frame uses a folded-edge clamping strip plus a full-perimeter silicone rubber gasket, so the viewing window never becomes the weak point in the ingress protection.

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

Folded-edge retainer

The key to window sealing

The window frame is not a simple hole with glass stuck over it. The door panel is folded to form a retainer, the glass is pressed into a full-perimeter silicone rubber gasket, and screws are tightened down. A window glued over a cutout leaks in the first rainy season.

Define components before cutting the window

Work back from the component layout drawing to the window position: window center aligned with the meter center, sight distance ≤1 m. In a cabinet where the window is cut first and the meters are placed afterward, one reading always ends up in the corner of the window.

Tempered glass selection

No sharp edges even when it breaks

Tempered glass is selected to the GB 15763.2 specification and breaks into granular pieces with no sharp edges. PC sheet resists impact but scratches and dulls; for frequent-wipe locations, weigh the two.

Anti-condensation combination

No fogged readings in winter

When the temperature difference between inside and outside the cabinet is large, condensation forms on the inner face of the window. Anti-fog coating or a 50–100W cabinet interior heater is available. This is standard configuration for unheated pump rooms in the north.

Quick-release latch

Skip the screw lock where inspection is frequent

Where the door is opened several times a day, replace the three-point lock with a quick-release latch that opens and closes one-handed. The viewing window reduces door opening to maintenance-level access, so match the lock to the inspection frequency.

Door stiffness check

A window cutout weakens the door

Cutting a window into the door panel reduces stiffness. Any heavy component hung on the door must be recalculated and a door brace added. This is the most common structural risk on cabinets with viewing windows.

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

Glass or PC window — which to choose?

For reading clarity and scratch resistance, choose tempered glass; for impact resistance where no risk of breakage is allowed (beside personnel aisles), choose PC. PC scratches over time and affects readability, so for frequent wiping choose glass.

Does a viewing window lower the ingress protection (IP) rating?

Not if it is built properly: folded-edge gasket + full-perimeter silicone rubber seal pressed together, IP54 maintained throughout; a window that is simply cut in and taped on does lower it — which is why that is not how we do it.

What about glass fogging in winter?

Two options: anti-fog coating on the inside of the window (light condensation) or a 50–100W heater inside the cabinet (heavy condensation). For unheated pump rooms in the north, we recommend fitting a heater.

Can a touchscreen HMI go behind the window?

Touch through glass is unreliable. Where the HMI needs frequent touch, we recommend mounting the HMI directly in a door cutout; leave the window for meters and signal lights — each does its own job.

How large can the window be?

Window width ≤400 mm and single-window area ≤0.2 sqm is the structural safety limit; anything larger requires a separate check of door panel stiffness. For large-area observation, go directly to the full glass door configuration.

Can an existing cabinet be retrofitted with a viewing window door?

Yes. Send the original cabinet dimensions and hinge positions, and we will produce a window cutout drawing based on the meter positions on the current door panel, then build a new door that drops straight in.
