Stainless steel distribution boxes

Where corrosion protection is needed, do not use iron that will rust
Model GU-SS · 304 / 316L · Wall-mounted / Floor-standing · IP65 optional · MOQ 1 unit
The problem a stainless steel distribution box solves is straightforward: where there is water, salt, acid, alkali, or washdown cleaning, an ordinary carbon steel enclosure rusts through in a few years, while stainless steel holds up. But "stainless steel" is not one single thing — 304 and 316L differ in salt and acid resistance, welding process determines whether the welds rust, and enclosure sealing determines whether the IP rating is actually achieved. These details are what you really need to ask about when selecting a stainless steel enclosure.
  • Material: 304 / 316L stainless steel available; 316L offers better salt and acid resistance, suited to coastal and chemical environments
  • Welding: TIG welding + pickling and passivation — welds do not rust, no weld scars on the surface
  • Sealing: door gasket + cable glands, IP65 protection optional
  • Surface: brushed / 2B mill finish, easy to clean, suitable for direct washdown in food and pharma workshops
  • Customization: dimensions, cutouts, and mounting method built to drawing

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

316L

Molybdenum for salt and acid resistance

316L adds molybdenum to 304, giving noticeably better salt-spray and acid/alkali resistance. In coastal, chemical and food environments, the extra material cost pays for itself within a few years.

Pickling

Post-weld pickling and passivation

Pickling and passivation after TIG welding keeps welds rust-free and the surface uniform. Poor weld treatment means the weld spots rust first and the whole enclosure is wasted.

Natural finish

Retains natural stainless steel finish

Stainless steel enclosures are not powder coated — the brushed or 2B natural finish is retained, easy to clean and washable. That is exactly what food and pharma plants need.

Sealing

Fully sealed door seams and cable glands

Door gasket + cable entry glands + hinge seals — that is what makes IP65 real. A nominal IP rating without sealing detail means nothing.

Custom build

Cutouts and dimensions to drawing

Dimensions, cutouts and mounting are all built to drawing. Stainless steel enclosures are mostly custom builds for a specific environment; standard units often do not fit.

Cleanability

No dead corners, easy washdown

Bends and welds are ground smooth with no dirt-trapping corners. Hygienic environments can be hosed down directly — no bacteria, no rust.

08 — FAQ

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

How do I choose between 304 and 316L?

For ordinary outdoor and damp environments, 304 is sufficient. For coastal salt fog, chemical acid and alkali, or aggressive food-plant cleaning agents, choose 316L. The test is one question: will salt, acid, alkali or strong cleaning agents be acting on it long term? If yes, go with 316L.

Will a stainless steel enclosure rust?

Under normal conditions, 304/316L will not rust. But rust spots can appear if the welds were not pickled and passivated, if the surface was scratched and contaminated by iron tools, or if non-stainless fasteners were used. We TIG weld plus pickle and passivate, and we use stainless steel fasteners, which eliminates these man-made rust spots.

Can it be hosed down directly?

IP65 rated units can. The door seams and cable entry points are sealed, so washdown water cannot get in. But tell us whether washing is a daily routine or occasional, and we will reinforce the sealing and select a more suitable enclosure type accordingly.

Can you build it to my dimensions and cutouts?

Yes. Stainless steel enclosures are essentially all custom builds. Send us the dimensions, cutout positions, mounting method and cable entry requirements, and we will produce after issuing drawings for your confirmation.

Can a PLC or VFD be installed inside?

Yes. A stainless steel enclosure can serve as pure power distribution, or house a PLC, VFD and contactors for control. Note that VFD heat must be managed; we can provide a thermal solution or use a larger enclosure.

What do you need for a quote?

Material (304/316L), dimensions or bill of materials, mounting method, ingress protection (IP) rating, cutout and cable entry requirements, and operating environment. Drawings are best; if you do not have them, we will develop a solution from your bill of materials.
