Explosion-proof control cabinets

In hazardous areas, control must also be fail-safe
Model GU-EXP · Ex d / Ex e / Ex p · Hazardous area control · PLC/VFD integration available · Customized per scheme
On top of an explosion-proof distribution box, an explosion-proof control cabinet adds control functions — equipment start/stop, interlocking, and even PLC logic and variable frequency speed control in hazardous areas, all completed inside an explosion-proof enclosure. The challenge is fitting control functions into an explosion-proof structure: operating elements must be explosion-proof types, cable entries must be explosion-proof sealed, and heat-generating components such as PLC and VFD also require a balance between heat dissipation and explosion protection. We produce and supply in joint supply with a professional factory holding Ex qualifications, getting both the control functions and the explosion-proof requirements right together.

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

Control

Control functions inside explosion-proof construction

Start/stop, interlock, PLC and VFD functions go inside an explosion-proof enclosure, with explosion-proof operating elements. Control functions and explosion-proof requirements are engineered together — not a flameproof box with components stuffed in.

Cooling

Heat balance for heat-generating components

PLCs and VFDs generate significant heat, so heat dissipation and explosion-proof integrity must be balanced in the design. If heat-generating components are not handled properly, excessive temperature inside the explosion-proof enclosure is itself a hazard.

Qualifications

Joint supply with a specialized manufacturer

Explosion-proof products are manufactured and supplied in joint supply with a specialized manufacturer holding Ex qualifications. Ex certificates are available for verification, and qualification documents ship with the order.

Operation

Explosion-proof operating elements

Handles, pushbuttons and indicator lights are all explosion-proof types. For operation in hazardous areas, ordinary components are an ignition source.

Sealing

Cable entry via explosion-proof glands

Explosion-proof cable glands / sealing fittings are used for incoming and outgoing cables. With many control circuits, explosion-proof sealing at cable entries matters even more.

Custom build

Custom-built to explosion-proof requirements

Control scheme, circuits, components and cable entries are all custom-built to project and explosion-proof requirements.

08 — FAQ

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

What is the difference between an explosion-proof control cabinet and an explosion-proof distribution box?

An explosion-proof distribution box is mainly for power distribution. An explosion-proof control cabinet adds control functions on top of distribution — start/stop, interlock, PLC and variable frequency drive control. The control cabinet must also address explosion-proof operating elements and heat balance for heat-generating components, so the technical requirements are higher.

Can PLC and VFD be integrated?

Yes. PLC logic and variable frequency speed control can be integrated in explosion-proof environments, but the heat dissipation versus explosion-proof balance has to be solved. Heat-generating components need dedicated design, and we handle that as part of the solution.

Do you hold explosion-proof certification yourselves?

Our explosion-proof products are manufactured and supplied in joint supply with an Ex-qualified manufacturer. We can provide the explosion-proof certificate for verification, and qualification documents ship with the goods. We will not pass off a cabinet without the proper certification as an explosion-proof cabinet.

How are operator components made explosion-proof?

Handles, pushbuttons and indicator lights are all explosion-proof types, and cable entries use explosion-proof cable glands. For operation in a hazardous area, ordinary components are a potential ignition source and cannot be used.

What applications suit pressurized (Ex p) protection?

Pressurized protection maintains positive pressure by supplying air to isolate hazardous gas, making it suitable for control cabinets with high capacity and many internal components. It is commonly used for high-capacity control and for locations requiring frequent maintenance.

What do you need for a quote?

Hazardous area classification, gas group, temperature class, control functions (start/stop, interlock, PLC, variable frequency drive), number of circuits and component requirements, installation environment. A hazardous area classification drawing is preferred.
