Explosion-proof distribution boxes

In hazardous areas, power distribution must be fail-safe too
Model GU-EX · Ex d / Ex e / Ex p · Hazardous area power distribution · Built to qualification and design
In explosive gas or dust atmospheres, a standard distribution box cannot be used — an explosion-proof distribution box is required. Explosion protection is not simply "making the box thicker"; it is a complete protection type design: flameproof (Ex d) contains an explosion inside through enclosure strength, increased safety (Ex e) prevents sparks by building in a larger safety margin, and pressurized (Ex p) maintains positive pressure to isolate hazardous gas. Production and qualification barriers for these products are high — we produce them in joint supply with an Ex-qualified manufacturer, with Ex certificates available for verification and qualification documents shipped with the goods.

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

Type

Select the protection type by hazardous area

Ex d, Ex e and Ex p each suit different situations — select by hazardous area, gas group and temperature class. Pick the wrong type and you either fall short on protection or pay for more than you need.

Qualifications

Joint supply with a specialized manufacturer

Explosion-proof products are manufactured and supplied in joint supply with a specialized manufacturer holding Ex qualifications. Ex certificates are available for verification, and qualification documents ship with the order.

Flameproof joint

Flameproof joint surface precision

The joint surface precision of an Ex d flameproof enclosure is critical — get it wrong and the flameproof capability is lost. This is the hard-won expertise of a specialized explosion-proof manufacturer.

Sealing

Cable entry via explosion-proof glands

Incoming and outgoing cables use explosion-proof cable glands / sealing fittings — no plain drilled holes. The cable entry is often the weak point of an explosion-proof box.

Nameplate

Clear explosion-proof marking

The explosion-proof marking, gas group and temperature class are clearly marked on the nameplate. This is a basic requirement for explosion-proof products and the basis for verification.

Custom build

Custom-built to explosion-proof requirements

Circuit count, components and cable entries are all custom-built to project and explosion-proof requirements. Explosion-proof boxes have no off-the-shelf configuration — every one is built to the hazardous area.

08 — FAQ

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

What is the difference between an explosion-proof distribution box and a standard distribution box?

Explosion-proof type design: flameproof (Ex d) contains an internal explosion through enclosure strength, increased safety (Ex e) adds safety margin, and pressurized (Ex p) isolates by maintaining positive pressure. There is also a qualification threshold — explosion-proof products require an explosion-proof certificate. Using a standard distribution box in a hazardous environment is a safety risk.

Do you hold explosion-proof certification yourselves?

Our explosion-proof products are manufactured in joint supply with an Ex-qualified manufacturer. The explosion-proof certificate is available for verification, and qualification documents ship with the goods. We will not pass off an uncertified box as an explosion-proof box.

How do you determine which explosion-proof type is required?

It depends on the hazardous area, gas group and temperature class. Zone 1 typically calls for Ex d or Ex e; Zone 2 can use Ex e or Ex p. The specific type is set by the site's area classification. Send us the environment details and application, and we will help confirm.

Can an explosion-proof box handle control functions?

Yes. Explosion-proof control boxes handle start/stop control of equipment in hazardous areas, with explosion-proof handles and indicator lights. Power distribution, control, metering and wiring are all available.

Can an outdoor hazardous environment have both explosion-proof and weatherproof protection?

Yes. Explosion-proof type combined with IP65/IP66 protection, plus weather-resistant and anti-corrosion treatment for outdoor use. Explosion protection and ingress protection are two separate dimensions, and both must be done right.

What do you need for a quote?

Hazardous area classification, gas group, temperature class, application, number of circuits and component requirements, installation environment. An area classification drawing is preferred; if you do not have one, we will confirm the solution from your description.
