The core of a conveyor line control cabinet is sequence control: sections start one by one against the material flow and stop one by one with the material flow. If any section faults, upstream sections interlock and stop immediately to prevent material pile-up. Four types of field protection signals — belt misalignment, pull cord, blockage, and slip — are wired into the safety circuit. Long-distance or steep-incline conveyors use VFD soft starting to reduce belt tension shock and mechanical stress. Section status is exchanged with host systems (WMS / scheduling) via Modbus or dry contacts.

Build details

Systems have been in service for decades, and the failure points are always the same few: poor busbar contact, water ingress at the door seal, high temperature rise in the correction cabinet, and mis-phased outgoing feeders. The six hard rules below are written for exactly these points — every cabinet can be traced to them.

Reverse-flow starting

Sequence is hardwired, not operator-dependent

The starting sequence is fixed in the control logic: it starts from the most downstream section and works up section by section, with an adjustable interval; the operator presses one button and the sequence cannot go wrong.

Interlocked shutdown

Upstream stops immediately, downstream runs empty

If any section faults, all upstream sections interlock-stop and downstream sections stop in sequence per the run-empty time, so material neither piles up nor jams the line.

Safety circuit

Protection wired as normally-closed series

Pull cords, belt misalignment switches and emergency stops are all wired in normally-closed series into the safety relay circuit; a broken wire stops the line — a broken wire is safer than a lost signal.

Section number cross-reference

Cabinet section numbers = field section numbers

Circuits, terminals and indicator lights inside the cabinet are all numbered to match the field section numbers, and a cross-reference table ships with the unit, so maintenance does not require tracing wires.

Full-line joint commissioning

Timing verified by powering each unit in sequence

At the factory the full line is powered to simulate sequential starting and single-section fault interlocked shutdown, and each timing step is checked off on the test record.

Dust and heat

Filtered fan with positive-pressure dust protection

The conveying environment is dusty; a positive-pressure filtered air path inside the cabinet keeps dust out so contactor contacts do not get fouled.

Six questions procurement and electrical engineers ask most

Why start against the material flow direction?

Start the downstream zone first so material has somewhere to go as soon as it drops on. If you start upstream first, material piles up on a downstream zone that is not running yet and jams the belt. Shutdown is the reverse: stop the furthest upstream zone first, let downstream zones clear the remaining material, then stop each zone in sequence.

How are pull cord switches laid out?

One side of the line, every 30–50 meters, connected by steel wire rope through conduit. Pulling at any point trips an emergency stop on the whole line or that zone. The pull cord signal goes to a normally closed safety circuit, and a broken (slack) rope must also be reported. Quantity and spacing to be agreed based on belt length and applicable standards.

How do I choose between relay logic and PLC?

Few zones (≤4) with fixed logic: relay logic is cheaper and more durable. Many zones, fault code reporting, takt interlocking: PLC is the better fit. We build both, and we recommend honestly based on zone count and requirements.

Can it connect to a WMS or dispatch system?

Modbus RTU / TCP reserved: zone run status, fault codes, and running hours reported upstream; start/stop commands sent down to zones. Protocol and point list to be agreed at the design stage; we support joint commissioning.

What if the belt is very long and needs drives at both head and tail?

Multi-point head/tail drives with VFDs, synchronized in speed and torque (master-slave control), to avoid a single drive point stretching the belt. Lines with steep incline or uneven terrain must be calculated for belt tension — send us the parameters and we will run the numbers.

Is slip detection necessary?

A belt running empty shows no problem. Once material is loaded, roller slip generates friction heat, and that is the fire risk. A speed switch compares roller speed against belt speed and trips an alarm when the difference exceeds the limit. Strongly recommended for long-distance and inclined lines.
