1. Why Do Outdoor BESS Cabinets Need a Rain Test? (Water Ingress = Short Circuit + Corrosion)

BESS containers sit outdoors long-term, and rainwater enters throughdoor gaskets, roof seams, cable pass-throughs, and louvered vents. The consequences of ingress: reduced insulation → short circuit → a trigger for thermal runaway; condensation inside the cabinet → busbar corrosion → rising contact resistance → overheating. That is why outdoor cabinets are commonly specified at IP54/IP55 or higher, and the rain test is what verifies this line of defense.

4. Common Failure Points and Fixes (where the water gets in)

  1. Door gasket: breaks in the continuous seal, open joints at 45° corners → switch to one-piece foamed gasket or a continuous compression seal;
  2. Top panel seams: intermittent lap welds on the top panel → switch to full welding + sealant + drip edge;
  3. Cable entry holes: bottom cable glands not fully sealed → install waterproof cable glands per specification;
  4. Fans / louvers: louvers facing the water → add a rain hood + louvered airflow labyrinth.

Are IPX5 and IP6X the same thing?

No.IPX5/IPX6 rate water protection(the X in the second digit position marks the water rating), while IP6X ratesDust-tight(the first digit). Outdoor BESS cabinets commonly carry a full IP55/IP66 requirement.

If there are water droplets inside the cabinet after the rain test, does it fail?

The criterion isno harmful water ingress— Water traces must not contact live parts or affect insulation. Condensation alone is not a failure, but any water ingress path must be corrected.

Can the factory run its own rain test?
