- Heptafluoropropane: lower cost, mature application, but high risk of re-ignition in deep-seated fires; often used together with water-based suppression.
- Water-based suppression: external cooling to keep adjacent battery clusters from being ignited; piping designed by a fire protection specialist firm.
- Grouping and zoning: one protection zone per battery cluster, so discharge coverage is controllable and the whole container is not flooded by a single activation.
4. Ventilation and pressure relief (give the explosion a way out)
Ventilation: exhaust fans interlocked with combustible gas concentration; air changes per hour set by design (to prevent combustible gas from accumulating to the lower explosive limit);Pressure relief: the battery compartment is fitted with relief panels / relief openings for directed venting, channeling the blast in a safe direction and preventing the enclosure from tearing apart. Relief area is calculated from the maximum explosion pressure of the combustible gas; relief openings are oriented away from personnel walkways.
