1. What an Explosion-Proof Junction Box Does (Branching / Transition / Sealing)

In a hazardous area, cables may not be stripped and spliced directly the way they are in ordinary locations — every splice must go into anexplosion-proof junction box: first, the splice is sealed inside a protected cavity; second, if the splice loosens or overheats, it cannot ignite the surrounding flammable gas. Intrinsic safety does not rely on the enclosure but oncircuit energy limitation: voltage and current are clamped by a safety barrier below the ignition curve, so even a short-circuit spark cannot ignite the atmosphere.

Can I leave extra cable entries on an explosion-proof junction box as spares?

Not recommended. Spare entries must be sealed with a plug to be compliant — missing plugs on site are a common inspection failure. Sizing the number of entries to the actual cable count is the safest approach.
