City node cabinets built around the whole street lighting network

Municipal cabinets are unattended infrastructure: they sit on a sidewalk for fifteen years, take a surge every thunderstorm season, and still have to report which lamp failed and on which circuit. GU ELECTRIC builds the PDU as one complete node — concentrator, per-circuit metering, surge protection and time-based control all wired and tested in the workshop, so the municipal crew only has to land the cables and commission on site.

Why municipal cabinets fail in the field

Municipal lighting is low voltage but hard duty: outdoors, unattended, hit by lightning year after year, and maintained by people who never sat in the design review. These are the four failure modes we design against.

Failure mode 01

Lightning and switching overvoltage

A long overhead line is a good antenna. Without coordinated surge protection, one thunderstorm season can take out contactors, drives and controllers — and the failure looks like a component quality problem, not a lightning strike.

No visibility into what each circuit draws

Without per-circuit metering, the only way to find a fault is to walk the street at night lamp by lamp. Energy reports are estimates, and cable theft or leakage can go unnoticed for months.

Water and condensation

A cabinet at the curb takes road spray and driving rain. One with an unsealed base and uneven door gasket compression becomes a water tank within two winters.

Smart features added later won't fit

Remote monitoring is often specified after the cabinet is installed. With no reserved space, no defined protocol and no spare circuits, adding it means replacing the cabinet you just bought.

How the city node is built, and what you can inspect against

Four design decisions, each mapped to one of the failure modes above. All are standard options, not add-ons.

02 Drawing review

An electrical engineer verifies the selection item by item, with a call if circuit details need clarifying, and issues a revised schematic.

03 Order & scheduling

Delivered 15-25 days after scheduling begins; urgent orders can take a fast track (volume plus stock components).

04 Factory testing

Every unit gets a powered functional test + 2500 V·1 min withstand + ground continuity + IP sampling.

05 Dispatch & acceptance

Finished-cabinet photos and routine test records before dispatch; the full documentation pack travels with the cabinet so commissioning can start on arrival.

Industry FAQs

Which concentrators and protocols do you support?

We integrate mainstream data concentrators and provide a complete Modbus RTU or TCP register map. If your city platform already has a fixed protocol, send us the spec — we confirm compatibility before quoting.

Can we get per-circuit energy data and fault alarms?

Yes. Per-circuit current transformers provide the consumption and load for each circuit, and the concentrator reports luminaire or circuit faults, contactor status, and door-open events to the platform.

How is surge protection handled?

Type 2 surge protection (40kA) is installed on the main incoming line and on each outgoing circuit, coordinated with the upstream protective devices, with a dedicated grounding bar. Long overhead incoming lines are the main reason we insist on surge protection.

Can the municipal crew install the cabinet themselves?

That is exactly what it is designed for. Terminals are numbered to the schematic, the register map ships with the cabinet, and we will join a commissioning call if needed. On-site work comes down to landing wires and checking circuits.

Do you have a stainless steel version for coastal roads?

Yes. The standard is RAL 7035 powder-coated carbon steel; for coastal routes or roads treated with de-icing salt, we recommend 304 stainless steel. If your site needs it, we will tell you straight.

Can you take on new applications like drone base stations?

We can discuss it. The core of these cabinets is outdoor sealing, power and charging management, hatch interlocking, and status reporting — all combinations we have built before. Send us the electrical conditions and communication requirements, and we will start with a design review.
